GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
This safety sensitive position (SS) is responsible for patrolling the city to enforce compliance with standard codes and city ordinances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Issues citations for city ordinance and code violations and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure that corrective action has been taken. This duty is performed daily.
2. Investigates complaints of possible code or ordinance violations. This duty is performed daily.
3. Conducts routine inspections of businesses to ensure compliance with local codes, ordinances, and licenses. This duty is performed monthly.
4. Documents ordinance violations by collecting evidence, preparing case file, and using investigative and documentation equipment. This duty is performed daily.
5. Reviews business license records, development/building permits, court records, case law, and other related media to research case violations. This duty is performed monthly.
6. Testifies in court regarding ordinance and code violations. This duty is performed monthly.
7. Provides information and assistance to the public regarding local ordinances. This duty is performed monthly.
8. Responds to telephone inquiries from the general public related to code interpretation and enforcement; investigates and addresses citizen concerns and complaints. This duty is performed daily.
9. Maintains files of inspections, re-inspections, notes, and required reports. This duty is performed daily.
10. May appear in court to testify. This duty is performed daily.
11. Removes garage sale signs and advertisements from utility poles or city right-of-ways. This duty is performed daily.
12. Operating a city vehicle is required for the essential functions.
13. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing and verbally with staff, management, and general public.
14. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- The ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs. of materials, supplies or equipment.
- Must be able to traverse on various surfaces when conducting inspections.
- Requires the ability to operate a computer, basic office equipment and smart phone.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines. Equivalent to four years high school or GED, with particular emphasis during high school in office skills, shop skills, or others, plus 0 to 6 months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read and understand documents such as policy manuals, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.
CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Ability to use common sense understanding in order to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few known variables in situations of a routine nature.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Asbestos Inspector License, Valid Driver License
and the ability to operate automobiles safely.
