Summary:
Under limited supervision, coordinates cardiopulmonary care for Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital patients. This position supports cardiac, pulmonary, and sleep medicine services through care coordination and direct patient care.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
Essential Job Functions:
- Coordinates care for patients requiring cardiopulmonary and sleep medicine services.
- Conducts pulmonary function tests.
- Assists Providers in procedures, e.g., bronchoscopies, transesophageal echocardiograms, and cardiac stress tests.
- Administers respiratory treatment in various modalities for acute and chronic respiratory illness as prescribed by the medical staff for neonate, pediatric, adolescent and adult patients.
- Ensures delivery of clinically appropriate respiratory care procedures. Instructs orients and recommends respiratory care and procedures to medical staff and allied health professionals.
- Mechanical Ventilation and oxygen support systems: Perform set-up, monitoring, assessment of equipment/pt. interface and makes appropriate changes. Recognizes abnormal changes and immediately notifies the responsible Provider.
- Maintains secure and patent airways and performs nasal, nasotracheal, endotracheal and oral suctioning.
- Distributes completed test results to Providers.
- Maintains patient charts, enters diagnostic information, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests and treatments performed.
- Provides patient education and instruction, answers questions, and explains procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualification:
Five (5) years of Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary experience required.
Three (3) years of intra-op assistance experience with Cardiology and Pulmonology procedures.
Education & Experience:
Must be registered or registry eligible by the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC). Registry eligibility includes:
- 18 years old AND
- Hold a minimum of an associate degree from a respiratory therapy education program supported or accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). OR
- Be a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) for at least four years prior to examination for RRT certification and have 62 college credits. OR
- Be a CRT for at least two years prior to RRT examination and have a minimum of an associate degree from an accredited entry-level respiratory care education program. OR
- Be a CRT for at least two years prior to RRT examination and hold a baccalaureate degree in an area other than respiratory care and have at least 62 college credits from an accredited program.
- Experience in assisting with bronchoscopies, echocardiograms, loop recorder insertions, and similar procedures required.
- Experience in performing pulmonary function tests required.
Degree of Supervision Required:
The Cardiopulmonary Specialist proceeds with minimal supervision from the Nurse Manager, in compliance with the philosophy, policies, procedures, and practices of SSMH and in collaboration with the attending Provider.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Current BLS certification required
- ACLS certification preferred at date of hire, required within six (6) months of hire.
- PALS certification preferred at date of hire, required within six (6) months of hire.
- NRP certification preferred.
