POSITION: Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/WIC Certifier

SALARY: $15.78 - $17.25, per hour DOE

REPORTS TO: WIC Coordinator

LOCATION: Nespelem, WA

Basic Functions:

A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor/WIC Certifier is a paraprofessional support person who performs WIC Certifier duties as outlined by State and Federal regulations and gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant women on the Colville Indian Reservation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

  • High School Diploma

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires Valid State Drivers License and eligible for tribal insurance.
  • Requires having breastfed (1) one or more children, preferably for (6) six months or more.
  • Requires enthusiasm about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience.
  • Requires the ability to drive in adverse weather conditions.
  • Requires the ability to life 50 pounds.
  • Requires willingness to travel to satellite clinics weekly.
  • Requires knowledge of Women, Infant and Children Program (WIC)
  • Requires knowledge of community, health, and social services resources.
  • Requires skills to communicate openly about the sensitive details of breastfeeding.
  • Requires knowledge of collection, tracking and submitting data for reports.
  • Requires skills in effective communication and listening.
  • Requires ability to work as part of a team.
  • Requires ability to network and identify community resources.
  • Requires the willingness to attend training assigned by supervisor.
  • Requires ability to exercise good judgement and discretion in applying guidelines and time frame to work situations.
  • Requires ability to follow to give complex written/oral instrucitions.
  • Requires ability to meet and deal with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner, and at time in stressful situations.
  • Requires the ability to be able to learn and perform hematocrit blood testing on women, infants and children. Procedure to be performed according to state standards and monitored by professional laboratory services personnel.
  • Requires the ability to learn the nutritional requirements of women, infants and children.
  • Requires ability to learn and implement computer software for WIC Program.
  • Requires the willingness to adhere to the professional and ethical code of conduct modeling a healthy lifestyle, free of non-prescribed drugs and alcohol during term of employment.
  • Requires the willingness to be able to work with vast diversity of people with a non-judgmental attitude.
  • Requires the successfully clear an extensive Criminal Background Inquiry and maintain throughout employment.
  • The position has been identified as a "safety sensitive" position. Pursuant to CCT policies, this position is subject to pre-employment, post-accident and random drug testing.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
