Job Summary:
A shop helper is in charge of providing technical assistance to staff. Their responsibilities include operating devices and machinery, assisting in kit arrangements, preparing and handing over tools to mechanics, monitoring the inventory of supplies, and performing basic repairs as needed.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Receive the next repair or service job from the dispatcher, advisor, team leader, or electronic technician terminal.
- Review vehicle history files and any factory bulletins that apply to vehicle make and model, paying special attention to outstanding campaigns.
- Make notes regarding proposed and additional work on hard copy or technician terminal.
- After authorization, request any parts required from the parts department and return any parts that have been requested to be saved by the customer or factory.
- If required, perform a test drive and restore the vehicle to its original condition, ensuring it is clean.
- Inform the dispatcher, advisor, team leader, or electronic technician terminal of the job completion and make any final notes regarding suggested additional work.
- Take all required and suggested training, keeping a record of classes and certifications completed.
- Keep informed of all safety guidelines of management and other agencies, especially the disposal of hazardous waste.
- Keep the work area clean and maintain the condition of both personal tools and shop tools.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to carry out detailed written, oral, or diagramed instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Currently enrolled or completed technical training school or factory apprentice program
- Self-motivated and diligent
- Positive attitude
Education and Experience:
- Valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- May lift objects that weigh as much as 50 lbs.
- Good hand-eye coordination.
- Prolonged periods of standing.
- Frequent reaching, bending, squatting, pulling and lifting.
