Denison University, a rigorous liberal arts college with a diverse campus community, is seeking an innovative, enthusiastic, and student-learning-centered individual for the role of Associate Director (AD) of Residential Communities and Housing. In this role, the AD will collaborate with professional and student staff to support and develop engaging residential communities that align with the college’s mission and strengths. Responsibilities include providing supervision and support to the Assistant Director(s) and indirect supervision to Community Coordinators and student Community Advisors. You will be participating in on-call rotations, serving as a conflict resolution resource, and coordinating programs and services. The AD will also work closely with campus partners, maintain visibility and engagement with the student body, and strive to create a culture of creativity, innovation, and trust. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in a related field, three years of relevant professional experience, and strong interpersonal and communication skills. Essential Job Functions
Fostering Residential Communities
  • Serve as a member of a team-oriented Residential Communities and Housing professional team. Contribute to the continued development and advancement of an innovative and engaging approach to community building and education based on Denison’s mission, leadership principles, commitment to civic engagement, creative problem solving, and elements of individual and community well-being.
  • Lead and work with professional staff, student staff, and residents to build vibrant, inclusive communities, employing innovative ideas and approaches and intentionally blending in the marquee strengths of the college.
  • Maintain high visibility and engagement with the student body and campus community at university events; work effectively with a culturally diverse population of students to coach, mentor and support dynamic needs.
  • Coordinate and design programmatic and other co-curricular initiatives (grounded in civic engagement, diversity, leadership development and creative problem solving), managing the assigned program budget and maintain records.
  • Employ appreciative advising and positive psychology practices in communication and interactions with students, colleagues and other constituencies.
  • Provide oversight and visioning for department programming and cohort programming in the residence halls to meet the evolving needs of our student population.
  • Supports and assists in coordinating CARE (student support) case assignments for professional staff in the department.
  • Oversee interpersonal conflict mediation efforts; serve as a resource for staff managing community disruption or conflict.
  • Coordinate opening and closing of residence halls, including early arrivals, first-year and upperclassmen move-in, break closings, and end-of-semester closing, and facilitate room inspections and damage billing.
  • Facilitate educational interpersonal meetings with students; encourage conflict resolution through mediation meetings and counsel and refer students as appropriate.
  • Serve in conflict resolution to address behavioral matters utilizing an educational framework and restorative justice principles.
  • Lead the development of social and digital media materials for the department.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with campus partners, students, faculty/staff and parents; and communicate regularly with these partners.
  • Capture the residential student experience through Student Engagement software to connect students/provide a modern campus experience.
  • Demonstrate generous support to the work of colleagues in Student Life as well as faculty and staff across the college.
  • Serve as an on-call professional for the University. Manage crisis situations; provide on-call response and report maintenance concerns.
  • Serve as the department liaison for Orientation and new student programs.


Staff Development and Supervision
  • Provide direct supervision to Assistant Director(s) and a Supportive Operating Staff Member and indirectly supervise Community Coordinator(s) and 60+ student Community Advisors via our intentional community development model,
  • Supervise and train student and professional staff, prioritizing community development, inclusion, and well- being skills and mindsets.
  • Direct the recruitment, selection, professional development, recognition, and evaluation of the paraprofessional staff.
  • Lead the planning, development, and coordination of all training programs, supplemental training opportunities, and in-services for paraprofessional staff.
  • Co-coordinate the development and implementation of onboarding, training, and evaluation for Assistant Director(s) and Community Coordinator(s).
  • Oversee the creation, continuity, and archive of digital resources for Community Advisors, including but not limited to: Community Advisor Resources Google Drive, the Community Advisor Manual, staff files, job action, and employment documents.

Strategic Planning
  • Assess, evaluate, and update programs and services to match the mission of the college, vision of the department and core student learning outcomes.
  • Strive to create a culture characterized by creativity and innovation in problem solving, optimism, individual initiative, a shared sense of responsibility, the intentional cultivation of trust, and attention to clear and timely communication.
  • Support the Director of Residential Communities and Housing and assist in departmental planning, goal setting, program evaluation and implementation, policy review and development, personnel, budget and assessment efforts.
  • Develop and maintain general knowledge of all departmental functions, processes, current operations, and trending issues to serve as a resource to others or to act in place of the Director.
  • Manage assessment efforts and establish departmental learning outcomes, implementation strategies and assess student satisfaction with the residential experience. Ensure findings are integrated into planning cycles with associated implementation timelines and achievement benchmarks.
  • In collaboration with other department leadership, create a Residential Communities & Housing annual report inclusive of assessment data, occupancy rates and other metrics of university interest.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This is a live-in/on position. A meal plan and furnished apartment with laundry, designated parking, and access to athletic facilities are provided.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 3-5 years relevant professional experience are required.
  • Ability to accommodate adapted work hours, including some evening and weekend work hours.
  • Must have a current, valid driver’s license and must be insurable under Denison’s liability insurance policy.
  • Must be able to work with diverse groups of people, possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, and have an understanding and appreciation for the liberal arts and residential colleges.

  • Background in working with small teams to accomplish tasks and meet stated goals and objectives.
  • Positive attitude and can-do spirit.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years relevant professional experience are required.
  • An earned Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, or other related advanced degree.
  • A propensity for innovation and creative problem solving.
  • An understanding and appreciation for the liberal arts and residential colleges and enjoys working with college students.


Physical Demands
At times, this position is required to lift no more than 20 pounds on an occasional basis and up to 10 pounds frequently. At times, this position requires standing, walking for 2 or more hours at a time. This position will navigate residence halls, stairs and hills in the course of their duties.

This is a live-in/on position. A meal plan and furnished apartment with laundry, designated parking, and access to athletic facilities are provided.

The Associate Director of Residential Communities reports directly to the Director for Residential Communities. This is a full-time, live-in position averaging 40 working hours per week. This position requires commitment and flexibility for some evening and weekend hours; outside employment is not encouraged.
