Canterbury School, a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day high school located in New Milford, CT, seeks a gifted digital storyteller to join its Marketing & Communications team.

The Associate Director of Digital Marketing is a new role reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications (MarComm) and is responsible for creating and managing Canterbury’s dynamic online presence. Specifically, this position will steward the School’s brand strategy through the web, social media, and email communication channels in service of the School’s enrollment and advancement goals and in advancing Canterbury’s reputation in the highly competitive boarding school market. This position will collaborate closely with the Director of MarComm and other administrative leadership to ensure brand and message alignment, while also building relationships with Canterbury’s faculty, staff, and students to source and adapt compelling storytelling assets for distribution on our digital platforms. The role requires the highest levels of organization, attention to detail, creativity and communication skills, and, most importantly, an unrelenting commitment to amplifying Canterbury’s mission and brand.

Primary Responsibilities

Website

  • Provide strategic oversight and daily management of the School’s website, including content/page creation and routine maintenance to ensure online content is accurate, timely, intuitive, engaging, and optimized for user experience.
  • Leverage Google Analytics and other measurement tools. Monitor and deploy SEO/SEM strategies and ensure alignment with overall marketing strategy.
  • Work with internal and external partners on opportunities for paid search and digital advertising in support of enrollment efforts.
  • Serve as the School expert on the School’s content management system (Finalsite). Train website content managers in other School departments on CMS use, functionality, and best practices. Regulate and manage the access rights of the different users.
  • Implement and maintain a style guide for all website content that maintains consistency across the site and aligns with the School’s visual brand.
  • Track, analyze, and report on web traffic metrics for continuous review of content effectiveness.
  • Assist with other digital and print marketing and communications projects and programs as needed.

Social Media

  • Create, publish, and manage all organic content on Canterbury’s central social media channels, finding creative ways to story tell, cultivate the School’s brand, and drive audience engagement.
  • Develop social content assets including but not limited to on-brand captions, photography, video, and graphics.
  • Maintain a content calendar for social marketing campaigns and communications initiatives, ensuring collaboration across other teams of the School to achieve broader integrated marketing strategies.
  • Keep Canterbury at the forefront of emerging trends in social and digital marketing from a strategic content perspective as well as testing and learning new platforms that strategically align with the School’s target audiences.
  • Provide monthly analysis and reporting on relevant social performance data.
  • Manage daily 1:1 engagement with followers (comments, reviews, questions, social listening, etc.).
  • Create and monitor ways to increase inbound traffic to the School’s website from social platforms.
  • Continuously audit the social media activities of the School and maintain awareness of our competitive market set in order to provide recommendations for enhancements and inspire best practices.

Email Marketing

  • Strategize, develop, execute, and report on a variety of email marketing initiatives, automated email marketing campaigns, and monthly e-newsletters for targeted audiences using email marketing best practices.
  • Liaise with campus partners on the use of CRM tools as part of marketing and communications outreach.

Minimum Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, digital media, or related field with a minimum of 3 years experience in a marketing and/or communications position. Prior experience in an independent school or higher education setting is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated social media acumen and proficiency with social media platforms, content marketing, and social media strategy.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, or WordPress; prior experience with Finalsite CMS is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with SEO/SEM.
  • Experience in optimizing landing pages and prospect funnels.
  • Excellent data analytical skills and experience with web analytics tools (e.g., Google Analytics/GA4).
  • Understanding of email marketing strategies and experience executing email campaigns; prior experience with workflows and marketing automation tools a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to create content with the use of mobile devices and/or cameras.
  • Strong graphics and video editing skills using Adobe Creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects) and Canva.
  • Familiarity with best practices for graphics and video content on web and social media platforms.
  • Technically proficient with the ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work autonomously and execute high-quality, creative concepts with minimal instruction.
  • Ability to collaborate across all levels and functions including with peers, students, and senior leaders to effectively achieve objectives.
  • Experience managing a variety of concurrent projects and production timelines simultaneously; ability to be flexible with assignments and shifts in priorities.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position. While the typical expectation is a Monday through Friday work week, there is an understanding that this position may require occasional evening or weekend work due to the nature of the role and the School cycle. Additionally, our strong preference is for this position to have a full-time presence on campus; however, we are open to conversation around a hybrid work schedule.
