Job Summary

The Department of English and Philosophy at Drexel University seeks applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track assistant teaching professor to begin fall 2023. The successful candidate will primarily teach composition courses in our first-year writing program. Depending on qualifications and experience, there may be occasional opportunities to teach other writing or literature courses in the department, or to contribute to the work of the University Writing Program. There are no requirements for scholarly productivity. Service requirements include attendance at department meetings; additional service work is optional and not required.

The initial contract is for one year, with the possibility of reappointment for renewable 2- or 3-year contracts. The teaching load is the equivalent of four three-credit courses in each of Drexel’s fall, winter, and spring 10-week quarters. Courses will typically be in traditional and/or hybrid format.

Located within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English and Philosophy is home to undergraduate majors in English, Philosophy, and PPE (Philosophy/Politics/Economics), as well as an MFA in creative writing. The English BA includes concentrations in literary studies, writing, and secondary education. The department has a strong record of civic engagement through community-based learning and other initiatives. Its emphasis on hands-on, applied learning opportunities results in strong career preparation for its students. The department features a strong commitment to antiracist pedagogy and practice.

Essential Functions

  • Teach four sections of first year writing each quarter, in traditional and hybrid format.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Master Degree or Equivalent Rhetoric/Communication, English or Creative Writing
  • Experience teaching first-year writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MFA, EdD, or PhD) in a relevant field is a plus.
  • Experience teaching other literature or writing courses is a plus.
  • Experience that could contribute to the University Writing Program's community engagement initiatives is a plus.
