Assistant Professor, Teaching, Special Education

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Assistant Professor, Teaching, Special Education at its Detroit campus location.

The College of Education at Wayne State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Special Education to begin in Fall 2023. This is a non-tenure track faculty position at 100% appointment for twelve (12) months. The successful candidate will have teaching and service responsibilities fall, winter, and spring/summer semesters and will serve as program coordinator. Some evening and weekends required as well as off-campus travel.

Position Purpose:

The successful candidate will join the Division of Teacher Education (TED) that attracts faculty, staff, and students who are committed to urban education and social justice. TED’s Special Education (SED) program prepares educators and leaders in the fields of special education, inclusive education, and disability studies in education through coursework that emphasizes the relationship between language and learning, historical and contemporary culture, disability identity, and the educational practices fundamental for transformation of societal structures leading to education for access and equity.

Essential Functions (Job Duties):

Teach and collaborate with program faculty to develop and schedule SED undergraduate and graduate courses, for PK-12 and adult educators.

Serve as the SED program coordinator and lead continuous improvement and program assessment.

Grow partnerships with school districts for endorsement, cohort teacher initiatives, and/or certification opportunities.

Mentor and help recruit and retain undergraduates.

Recruit and evaluate part-time faculty teaching in Special Education.

Participate in Special Education meetings and participate in TED and College of Education meetings.

Work with program faculty to advance, nurture, and sustain a vision for the program that includes open communication, collaborative decision-making, and transparency.

Qualifications:

Earned doctoral degree in Special Education, or Teacher Education or Curriculum & Instruction with specializations in Special Education, Inclusive Education, Disability Studies, or related field.

Demonstrated commitment to inclusive education and inclusive teaching.

Minimum of three years of U.S. teaching experience in PK-12 classrooms with special education students who have moderate to significant support needs.

University-level teaching experience, including on-campus, online and hybrid formats.

Experience in program coordination, curriculum development, and recruitment and retention of students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated commitment to inclusive education and inclusive teaching.

Experience supervising clinical or practicum experiences in SED segregated or inclusive settings.

Experience working in urban, racially and linguistically diverse, and inclusive settings.
