The Statistical Center for HIV/AIDS Research and Prevention (SCHARP) at Fred Hutch is a full service statistical and data management center focused on HIV prevention research. SCHARP has an annual budget of over $40 million, more than 180 employees and is currently managing over 40 active phase I – III clinical trials in over 150 clinical sites around the world. SCHARP is seeking an Assistant Manager, Statistical Programmers.
The Assistant Manager, Statistical Programmers oversees a team of programmers that provide support for the management, reporting, quality control and analysis of clinical trials data by developing and maintaining code, building workflows to facilitate creating analysis datasets and reports. The Assistant Manager, Statistical Programmers is responsible for managing employees and will work with the section manager to provide leadership for the team. This includes development of policies, procedures and methods, managing resources, workload,and priorities; mentoring junior staff; overseeing process improvement projects and participating in recruiting and training of new employees. Core to the role is communicating effectively with team members and being responsive to the needs of various stakeholders and partners, both internal and external to SCHARP. The Assistant Manager, Statistical Programmers should be able to complete all the responsibilities of a Statistical Programmer.
- Provide training within the group and for other SCHARP groups; coordinate resources for cross-training efforts; identify and support opportunities for enhancing knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Collaborate with other SCHARP groups to develop and maintain standard programming quality practices including code standardization, verification and validation efforts and associated documentation; contribute to adoption of CDISC standards as applicable.
- Provide technical oversight for programmers; develop and support best practices for programming; establish policies, procedures and methods that support scientific and academic excellence and oversee associated process/infrastructure improvements.
- In partnership with the Statistical Programming Manager, provide team leadershipand mentoring, manage resources, recruit new staff, evaluate progress and priorities, develop new workflows or methodologies and other opportunities for team growth.
- In partnership with the Statistical Programming Manager,develop and maintain staff morale, engagement and professional growth in pursuit of Irresistible Organization. Serve as acting manager as needed, oversee workloads, guide process development, manage performance-related issues, and supervise and conduct performance reviewsof direct reports.
- Manage projects and deliverables; monitor milestones and timelines, allocate resources as needed, communicate with stakeholders about progress, priorities and workload capacity; communicate decisions and identify and address issues that may impact the team; coordinate with other programming groups to identify and address common issues.
- Participate in annual budgeting and reporting processes.
- Provide input into long term resource planning.
- Participate in the interview and hiring process.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a scientific, technical, or health-related field, and at least five years of experience as a Statistical Programmer in a clinical trials research setting or equivalent years of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a matrix management environment as a member of several project teams.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and appropriately prioritize work assignments.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate programming issues with non-technical staff.
- Experience with either SAS or R statistical software, preferably on a Unix platform.
- Advanced SAS and strong SAS Macro and reporting experience or advanced R experience including package development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Computer Science or a scientific, technical, or health-related field.
- At least one year of previous supervisory experience in a technical work environment.
- Coursework or training in leadership, project management or business practices.
- Experience with estimating and preparing project budgets.
- Proficient use of database management and programming software.
- Experience in writing program, system, and/or database documentation.
- Experience with SQL and relational databases.
- Knowledge of CDISC standards.
- Knowledge of laboratory data.
