This unique accounting role is responsible for providing key support to the Board of Investments (BOI) by accurately processing, recording, and documenting daily investment transactions using multiple accounting systems, including the Statewide Accounting, Budgeting, and Human Resource System (SABHRS).

The (BOI) provides prudent investment management of state and local government funds; works with financial institutions, state agencies, and local governments to enhance and expand Montana’s economy and assist new and expanding Montana businesses; and lends low-interest funds to eligible governments for a variety of projects.

The Accounting Bureau accounts for the investment of various long-term funds, trust accounts, and investment pools (e.g., retirement, trust, and insurance funds; state treasury cash; and other funds as permitted by statute). This includes developing and maintaining transactional accounting systems; managing transactions and relationships with investment advisors and custodial banks; providing statewide management and expertise in investment accounting; and preparing accurate and timely periodic and annual financial statements.

Responsibilities:


  • Accurately process, record, and document daily investment transactions using multiple systems.
  • Review accounting and other related systems to ensure completeness and accuracy in the processing of transactions, compilation of information, and ensuring proper financial controls.
  • Analyze, research, and resolve discrepancies, if found.
  • Prepare multiple reconciliations and supporting documentation from various systems to verify accuracy and completeness. Reconciliations are performed daily, monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Accurately process monthly and fiscal year-end entries, reconciliations, and analysis in coordination with other staff and participants.
  • Prepare reports and may be required to present to the Board in coordination with other staff.
  • Assist with preparation of financial statements and related disclosures in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in coordination with other staff.
  • Provide backup support and training for other accounting staff to ensure cross-training and timely investment account processing, reconciliation, and reporting.
  • Research and analyze investment accounting concepts and strategies and recommend appropriate procedures and controls for accounting activities.
  • May assist in the coordination of special studies and analyses to enhance the procedural efficiency, internal controls, and accuracy of accounting functions.
  • Assist in a variety of other technical accounting duties as needed, which may include attending meetings and participating in trainings.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiastic individual willing to work collaboratively with the team.
  • Passion for working with numbers, reconciling accounts, auditing results, and streamlining processes.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience with advanced Excel, including experience designing and troubleshooting pivot tables.
  • Desire for continuing education in GAAP and GASB requirements.
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field plus 4 or more years job of related experience. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered. Training Assignment will be considered.
