The Opportunity:
The University of Central Florida (UCF) Student Success and Well-Being (SSWB) is seeking qualified applicants for an Academic Advisor IV. The Academic Advisor IV will assist in providing vision, direction, and management of the Tutorial and Learning Assistant Programs. In addition, the advisor will help facilitate the transition for selected student-athletes into the university community and help them develop the academic skills necessary to progress and graduate. The advisor will provide academic advising to student-athletes on assigned teams. The academic advising will include the scheduling of classes, major selection, and required exams for enrollment/graduation to ensure students are making satisfactory progress toward their degree. The Academic Advisor IV is an Administrative and Professional (A&P) position with SSWB and is supervised by the Associate Director of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (ASSA).
Responsibilities:
Academic Advising/Mentoring
  • Provide academic advising to student-athletes on assigned teams. This includes scheduling of classes, major selection, and required progression for enrollment/graduation to ensure students are making satisfactory progress towards their degree.
  • Monitor academic progress for continuing eligibility, transfer eligibility, and graduation, coordinate travel letter distribution, produce academic grade reports, monitor study hall hours, oversee mentoring of at-risk student-athletes, and communicate often with the coaching staff.
  • Assist in the recruitment process, keep current with changes in NCAA and university policies, and maintain daily communication with students and coaches on assigned teams in regard to academic development.
Tutorial Program
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training tutors.
  • Establish professional relationships with campus personnel to effectively recruit for tutor positions and provide leadership to the tutorial program to maintain certification by the College Learning and Reading Association.
  • Communicate with all other ASSA staff, athletic department staff as needed, and university personnel on issues pertaining to the tutoring program as necessary.
  • Responsible for understanding the various uses of GradesFirst and maintaining accurate information about tutoring on the ASSA website.
Miscellaneous Duties
  • Understanding compliance with the rules is a critical element of this position along with adhering to NCAA, Conference, UCF, and UCFAA rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Attend appropriate rules compliance programs offered by the NCAA, Conference, UCF, and UCFAA Athletics Compliance Office.
  • Attend all ASSA staff meetings, SDES, and UCFAA meetings as requested or assigned by the Director of ASSA and collaborate with other offices on campus as necessary.
  • Assist ASSA and UCFAA staff members with other assignments, events, and special projects including managing study hall area, recognition ceremonies and awards nominations, orientations, life skills programming, book distribution, and collection, etc.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree and 2+ years.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with student-athletes at the Division I level.
  • Experience working with at-risk student-athletes in an academic support environment including mentoring and advising.
  • Familiarity with coordinating a study hall or a computer lab.
  • Experience with tutorial programming and planning
  • Familiarity with NCAA progress rules.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population and with a dynamic staff in a fast-paced environment.
