Working under regular guidance of experienced advising staff in the College of Science and Technology’s Center for Academic Advising and Professional Development, the Academic Advisor I provides comprehensive academic advising to students and assists them in making decisions affecting their academic progress. Meets regularly with students pursuing majors, minors and certificates within the College of Science and Technology’s Computer and Information Sciences, Mathematics and Physics Departments to discuss academic and professional goals. Assists with course selections and registration activities including scheduling, major selection, credits per semester, and academic standing.
The Academic Advisor I facilitates new student orientation and advising sessions, coordinates advising with career planning and professional development, and provides access to information and resources for the achievement of academic, career and personal goals. Maintains academic records, reviews and evaluates transcripts and interprets relevant University and College policies as appropriate. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
The focus is on academic advising and curriculum planning with students in an individual or group setting. This involves the development, coordination, and implementation of educational counseling services geared to achieving, maintaining or improving student success and retention.

This position is assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote). The duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the hiring department.
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of relevant advising experience. Computer software experience including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to assist students who are pursuing a wide range of majors and academic goals within the College of Science and Technology.
- Demonstrated ability to present in both small and large group settings.
- Demonstrated ability to follow set policies/procedures and explain them to students in a concise accurate manner.
- Ability to advise, assess and evaluate curricular needs for students to ensure correct development towards graduation standards.
- Excellent ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of students, faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a positive and objective client service approach and attitude even when confronted with difficult, highly emotional students or parents in advising and counseling situations.
- Ability to prioritize well and focus on completion of tasks and objectives while under stress of demanding work schedule.
- Ability to work some nights and weekends (approximately 6-weekend dates annually).
Preferred:
- Master’s degree.
- Experience in an academic setting in higher education or related field.
- Experience with a Self-Service Banner or other student learning platform.
